Be Impeccable with Your Word
Updated: Jun 29, 2020
The first of Don Miguel Ruiz’s The Four Agreements is this - be impeccable with your word. The other day, Jen, one of the yoga instructors I respect very much, built the class message around this exact agreement. Unbeknownst to her, that very same day, I literally spoke out loud to myself and to others, “I am too much, too strong and too hard to love.”
The same day I uttered those words out loud, I texted them to a former boyfriend- and then the kindest gesture happened. He called. Immediately. Which never happened. “You silly,” he said teasingly. “You are one of the best people I know, you are way too hard on yourself.”
Jen reminded me what I had forgotten. “Be impeccable with your word” does not simply refer to what you say out loud about others. - it is also what you say to yourself. She gently reminded us to start with positive self-talk versus putting ourselves down, being hard or negative to or about ourselves. She was right on point.
So, here’s what I’ve learned about speaking impeccable words to myself: I am not too much. I am not too hard to love. I am more than enough. I am kind. I am big-hearted. I am love. I am not perfect, and that’s okay. And, yes, I deserve to be a priority. It is not too much to ask.
Find a place where you can be more aware of being impeccable with your words to self - and then to others.
That’s my not so sexy truth.
Sending much love ~
